Two Citizens’ Think-Ins already took place in Killorglin (Kerry) and Dundalk (Louth). Participants have brought their experiences to the discussion, and main themes emerged about how older adults view the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Participants see big potential in AI as a supportive tool for independent living through systems that can detect health conditions at an early stage, for example through monitoring heart rhythms. These benefits for AI in healthcare come with strong cautions, such as data privacy and knowing who has access to the sensitive information.
Another main topic is trust in data and ethical data collection, including clear communications and transparency, for example when it comes to the design of terms and conditions. It was seen as personal accountability to double-check the AI recommended content, with the individual as the final decision-maker.
Misinformation has been another main topic, where people highlighted the importance of a human in the loop, referring to an individual reviewing and validating online content. The concept of critical thinking, where the individual double-checks the online information with trustworthy sources.
